The General Election,
What Is the Most Vital Issue?
(S684aa: 1910)

Editor Charles H. Smith's Note: A letter to the Editor responding, along with remarks from several others, to a general enquiry. Printed on page 150 of the 30 November 1910 issue of The Christian Commonwealth. To link directly to this page, connect with: http://people.wku.edu/charles.smith/wallace/S684AA.htm

Dr. Alfred R. Wallace.

The present Government is the first in the civilised world which has recognised as its duty, and declared its intention to abolish starvation and degrading poverty in the midst of its ever-increasing wealth; and has actually taken the first steps in the performance of this duty. The veto of the Lords is an absolute bar to the effective performance of this admitted duty. Every voter who really wishes this deadly curse and crime against humanity to be removed should exert himself, by vote and influence, to give Mr. Asquith such an increased majority as will enable him to perform this great and truly Christian work. He will thus best prove his own patriotism by placing this country in the van of the great powers as regards social reform--the most essential factor of a true civilisation.
