Alfred Russel Wallace, F.R.S., Jan. 8, 1823.

Mr. Wallace writes:--

     "My favourite motto is 'Fiat Justitia Ruat Cœlum.'

     " . . . My tastes are wide, and I care little for literature or poetry apart from the sentiment and teaching. My favourite poets are Longfellow, Tennyson, Hood, and Charles Mackay, and a few others; but of course Shakespeare, at his best, is first and unapproachable."
