Letter Regarding Lord Penrhyn
(S535aa: 1897)

Editor Charles H. Smith's Note: A letter regarding Lord Penrhyn read at the annual meeting of the Land Nationalisation Society on 28 April 1897. Printed on page 43 of the May 1897 issue of Land and Labour. To link directly to this page, connect with: http://people.wku.edu/charles.smith/wallace/S535AA.htm

Our respected President, Dr. Alfred Russel Wallace, wrote as follows:-- "I am very glad to see that you are endeavouring to enforce the object lesson which Lord Penrhyn has given to the country. Many must now perceive more clearly than they have done before, the dangers to the community inherent in private property in Land and Minerals. It is bad enough for an individual to be allowed to work the latter for his own exclusive benefit, thus permanently deteriorating our native land; but when, in addition to this, he claims and exercises the power to forbid thousands of men to work except on his own unjust and oppressive terms, and thus drives honest and industrious families from their homes, to their serious loss or ruin, even the most conservative must see that this power is not consistent with the public good."
