Dr. A. R. Wallace's Address.
(S423b: 1890)

Editor Charles H. Smith's Note: A letter to the Editor, correcting an error. Printed on page 3 of the 23 June 1890 issue of The Daily Chronicle (London). To link directly to this page, connect with: http://people.wku.edu/charles.smith/wallace/S423B.htm

To the Editor of the Daily Chronicle.

Sir,--In the excellent summary you have given of my address to the Land Nationalisation Society there is a slight, but important error, which I ask your permission to correct. Instead of saying that "in 1872, 17 per cent. of the people of London were found in workhouses, gaols, and lunatic asylums, and that in 1888 22 1/2 per cent. were there;" what I did say was, that in 1872, 17 per cent. of the deaths in London were of the inmates of workhouses, hospitals, and lunatic asylums, while in 1888 this proportion had increased to 22 1/2 per cent. The fact is a very important one, and is wholly inconsistent with the common allegation that the condition of the working-classes of London has been improving during the last 16 years.—I am, Sir, yours, &c.

Alfred R. Wallace.
Parkstone, June 20.
