TACHYGLOSSIDAE (Echidnas)

The Tachyglossidae is a family of egg-laying mammals of the Order Monotremata. There are two
living genera: Zaglossus (three species, New Guinea) and Tachyglossus (one species, New
Guinea and Australia). Found on several nearshore islands, including Salawati (west of New
Guinea), Groote Eylandt, Melville Island, Fraser Island, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania, and some
islands in the Bass Strait.
