PHYLLOSTOMIDAE (New World Leaf-nosed Bats)

The Phyllostomidae is a large (over 50 genera and over 150 species in total) family of
microchiropteran bats divided into the subfamilies Brachyphyllinae (West Indies), Carolliinae
(Mexico, Central and South America, West Indies), Desmodontinae (vampire bats; Mexico,
Central and South America), Glossophaginae (U.S., Mexico, Central and South America,
West Indies), Phyllonycterinae (West Indies), Phyllostominae (U.S., Mexico, Central and
South America, West Indies), and Stenodermatinae (Mexico, Central and South America,
West Indies). Within their general range one or more species populate many adjoining
islands. Recently recorded from Key West, Florida.
