ORNITHORHYNCHIDAE
(Platypuses)
The Ornithorhynchidae is a family of egg-laying mammals of the Order Monotremata.
The
sole
living representative of the group is Ornithorhynchus anatinus,
the (duckbill)
platypus. Its distribution
is confined to the easternmost portion of the Australian
continent,
including
Tasmania and some
islands in the Bass Strait. Introduced to
Kangaroo Island,
South Australia.
