MACROSCELIDIDAE (Elephant Shrews)
The Macroscelididae, restricted to Africa, is the only living family of the
Order Macroscelidea. There
are about four extant genera and fifteen species: Elephantulus (ten
species, North and Central, East
and Southern Africa), Macroscelides (one species, South Africa and
Namibia), Petrodromus
(one species, Central, East and Southern Africa; present on Mafia and Zanzibar),
and Rhynchocyon
(three species, Central and East Africa; present on Mafia and Zanzibar).
