HYSTRICIDAE (Old World Porcupines)
The Hystricidae is a family of Old World rodents (Suborder Hystricomorpha)
consisting of
three
genera of living forms: Atherurus (two species, tropical Africa,
Southeast Asia, and
China), Hystrix
(eight species, Africa, Southwest, South and Southeast Asia, and
China),
and
Trichys (one species,
Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaya). Italian and Albanian-Greek
populations of Hystrix
cristata are
thought to have possibly been introduced. Native island
populations of hystricid
species are
found on Bioko, Zanzibar, Sri Lanka, Hainan,
Butang, Pinang, Tioman, and
several
Indonesian and Philippine islands.
