GLIRIDAE (Dormice)
The Gliridae is a medium-sized family of Old World rodents (Suborder Sciuromorpha).
There are
three subfamilies recognized: Graphiurinae (one genus, Graphiurus,
fourteen species, Subsaharan
Africa), Leithiinae (six genera, twelve species, Europe, North Africa, Southwest
and Central Asia,
China), and Glirinae (two genera, two species, Europe, Southwest Asia, and
Japan). Selevinia
betpakdalaensis, from Kazakhstan, is now included in the Leithiinae,
though earlier sometimes
assigned to its own family, the Seleveniidae. Glirid species are found on
many Mediterranean islands;
the population of Glis glis in Britain is apparently introduced.
