GEOMYIDAE (Pocket Gophers)

The Geomyidae is a family of New World rodents (Suborder Castorimorpha) consisting of about
forty living species, and six genera: Cratogeomys (central and western U.S., Mexico), Geomys
(western Canada, U.S., northern Mexico), Orthogeomys (Mexico, Central America, northwestern
Columbia), Pappogeomys (central Mexico), Thomomys (central and western U.S., western
Canada, Mexico), and Zygogeomys (central Mexico). Some species have subdifferentiated into
large numbers of subspecies populations, often of very limited geographical range.
