ERETHIZONTIDAE (New World Porcupines)

The Erethizontidae is a family of New World rodents (Suborder Hystricomorpha) consisting of two
subfamilies of living forms: Chaetomyinae (one species, Chaetomys subspinosus, coastal southeastern
Brazil), and Erethizontinae, represented by four genera: Coendu (four species, Panama southward to
northern Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay), Echinoprocta (one species, Andean Colombia),
Erethizon (one species, Alaska, Canada, U.S., and northern Mexico), and Sphiggurus (nine species,
southern Mexico southward to northern Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay).
