CAENOLESTIDAE
(Shrew Opossums)
The Caenolestidae is a family of marsupial mammals of the Order Paucituberculata
consisting
of three living genera: Caenolestes (three species, northwestern
South America), Lestoros
(one species, southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia), and Rhyncholestes
(one species,
southern Chile). The family's distribution is highly relictual,
as a number of additional families
from the order are known in the fossil record.
