BALAENOPTERIDAE (Rorquals)
|
The Balaenopteridae, including the largest whales, are a division of the Suborder Mysticeti, Order Cetacea. There are
two recognized
genera, Balaenoptera (6 species,
though a couple more have been named recently), and Megaptera
(1 species, the Humpback). Both genera (and most of the individual species) are nearly worldwide in distribution,
being absent
only from polar waters, and apparently the Black and Baltic Seas.
