BALAENIDAE

The Balaenidae, consisting of four species of bowhead and right whales, are found in both hemispheres, but not
in tropical regions. Balaena mysticetus, the Bowhead, is found in arctic waters; of the three right whales,
Eubalaena, two are distributed in north temperate waters and the third in the southern ocean. The family is a
division of the Suborder Mysticeti, Order Cetacea. All four species are endangered, and their low
numbers make distribution assessment difficult.
