Project 1
Project 2
Project 3

  • Project 1

    • Make a one-minute video where the camera never moves that contains a compelling *soundscape (a soundscape is the acoustic environment as perceived by humans, in context)

      • Find a sonic environment with unique layers of sound that interests you.

      • Consider it a starting point, and we can work out where it goes from there. It should be relatively quiet so you can really listen carefully.

      • Find a comfortable position where you can linger for a long time.

      • There are no conceptual boundaries for this project, but I need to hear evidence that you are using your "ears" to navigate toward your conceptual goals.

      • Edits or cuts can be used, but no post-production special effects may be employed.

      • Use only sound recorded on site at the time of recording, no music, either prerecorded or live, can be used.

      • Make multiple takes of the shot in order to get the one that works best.

    • Things to keep in mind

      • You will need a smartphone or mobile device. Charge your phone and bring headphones if necessary.

      • Get closer to your subject – make it the foreground, so your chosen sound is unambiguously the center of attention.

      • If you realize that your site lacks sonic diversity to make compelling recordings, go somewhere else. You’re hunting for sound relationships, so be open to changes in your plans.

      • If your site has a fan of some sort, please don’t do a close-up of it. That’s way too easy and usually results in a boring recording of white noise. There’s plenty of broadband noise in town. Seek out more subtle sounds and help them rise above the noise!

      • Use a windscreen if necessary. The foam or fur cover of a microphone is called a windscreen. Without a windscreen, wind or breathing can cause loud pops in the audio signal. Any materials like foam or fur will effectively reduce wind and handling noise.

    • Submission
        1. Written statement (note) that describes your creative process.
          • It doesn't need to be extensive, just a few lines on what you are thinking of doing.

          • Type text, include drawings or simbols if necessary.

        2. Digital file
          • MP4, 1920 x 1080px, Stereo

          • Length: 60 seconds

          • Name your file properly! title_first_lastname.mp4

  • Project 2
    • Create a short experimental animation. The concept/technique is open, however, whatever you approach, it must explore abstract (non-representational) sound and images.

      • Start this project by brainstorming ideas, utilizing the techniques and topics we have covered. Consider it a starting point, and we can work out where it goes from there.

      • Do some research to gather project ideas. This will allow you to find various ways to engage in your project.

      • Attempt to articulate a formal logic in terms of movement and spatial construction.

      • I want you to take risks and step outside your comfort zone.

      • Note-taking (documenting the working process of your projects)

        • Note-taking combines handwritten notes, drawings, and your creative impulse.

        • It helps you think clearly and more creatively.

        • It will keep your brain active, engaged, and stimulated.

        • It leads to an understanding of the process of your work.

        • You will discover ways to amplify your strengths and learn from past mistakes with honesty and self-reflection. They are never "right" or "wrong" in a general sense.

  • Project 3

    • Create a short, experimental animation. The concept/technique is open, however, whatever you approach, it must explore abstract sound and images.

    • Follow your instincts and intuitions, and trust your natural feelings or reactions.

    • Why are we doing what we are doing?
Each of us has a very particular taste, interest, and likes-dislikes. Likes-dislike sounds somewhat childish behavior, but we are often steered by those low-level binary reactions of like or dislike, interest or indifference. These decisions are made immediately and are as unpredictable, irrational, and unmanageable as acts of nature.

      • Use simple abstract or geometric forms, and create an animation based on the "repetition", a rhythmic sequence of transformations of shape, color, position ect.

      • Do some research to gather project ideas. This will allow you to find various ways to engage in your project.

      • Attempt to articulate a formal logic in terms of movement and spatial construction.

Research paper: Find a reference (an artist and her work samples)', and
write a short statement that describes how each source impacted your project.
*you will give a presentation of your research during critique.
