Smith, Lyman Bradford (United States 1904-1997)

Lyman Smith has sometimes been referred to as "the father of bromeliad studies" for his many contributions to the systematics and natural history of the family Bromeliaceae. He also worked on the Velloziaceae, Xyridaceae, and Begoniaceae. Smith spent a good deal of time working in South America.

--born in Winchester, Massachusetts, on 11 September 1904.
--1925: A.B., Harvard
--1929: A.M., Harvard
--1929-1930, 1956-1957, 1964-1965: botanical collecting expeditions in Brazil
--1930: Ph.D., Harvard
--1931-1947: curatorial positions at the Gray Herbarium, Harvard
--1947: made associate curator in the Division of Phanerogams, U. S. National Museum
--1948: expedition to Argentina
--1952: works on malaria control in Brazil
--1955: publishes his The Bromeliaceae of Brazil
--1957: made curator in the Division of Phanerogams, U. S. National Museum
--1957: publishes his The Bromeliaceae of Colombia
--1966: made senior botanist, U. S. National Museum
--1974: made botanist emeritus, U. S. National Museum
--1986: publishes his Begoniaceae
--dies on 4 May 1997.
