Chrono-Biographical Sketches
Hjort, Johan (Norway 1869-1948)
marine & fisheries biology
from Wikipedia.org |
Johan Hjort was among the most prominent fisheries
biologists of his time. Hjort was a strong advocate of scientific modeling
procedures for fisheries biology whose population studies contributed
to the development of the maximum yield and optimum yield concepts, and
age determination analysis. His 1914 article "Fluctuations in the Great
Fisheries of Northern Europe" was a pivotal work in the development of
fisheries science. Hjort was also active in those areas of international
law and diplomacy affecting fisheries, a founder of the International
Council for the Exploration of the Sea, and the author of several books
on more philosophical subjects of a biological nature.
