Chrono-Biographical Sketches

Du Rietz, G(ustaf) Einar (Sweden 1895-1967)
botany, ecology, phytogeography

Du Rietz spent his entire professional career at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, where he was well known as the leader of the "Uppsala school" of phytosociology. Among his accomplishments there was co-founding the Societas Phytogeographica Suecana and its journal Acta Phytogeographica Suecica. Du Rietz published most of his writings in Swedish or German, but seemingly reserved English for his most wide-reaching statements, e.g., "The Fundamental Units of Vegetation" (1929), "Factors Controlling the Distribution of Species in Vegetation" (1929), "Classification and Nomenclature of Vegetation" (1930), "The Fundamental Units of Biological Taxonomy" (1930), "Life-forms of Terrestrial Flowering Plants" (1931), and "Problems of Bipolar Plant Distribution" (1940). One of Du Rietz's specialties was lichens.
