Becoming a Teacher of Psychology
There are several options
for teaching psychology, each requires different career paths depending on the
population you want to teach.
Teaching Psychology in
a Secondary School.
- You will need to be admitted
to a teacher education program and will have to obtain secondary certification.
- Contact the Teacher Education
Department for further information
Teaching Psychology
in a Two-Year College
- A master's degree in
some area within psychology is needed for teaching at this level.
- Review material on master's
graduate programs (M.A. or M.S.), such as Western's
clinical psychology program (http://edtech.wku.edu/~psych/areas/clinic/).
- Identify programs using
the APA's "Guide to Graduate Study in Psychology."
- Look for programs or
courses designed to prepare persons for teaching in two-year colleges.
Teaching Psychology
in a Four-Year College or University
- You will probably need
a doctorate in psychology. Investigate the other options for advanced training
in psychology to identify an area of interest in which to earn your psychology
doctorate.
- Identify programs using
the APA's "Guide to Graduate Study in Psychology."
- When investigating doctorate
programs, evaluate the university training resources. Do they have a graduate
teaching assistant development program?
