The Echimyidae is a good-sized (18 genera and 84 living species) family of 
    hystricomorph
    rodents. Three subfamilies of living forms are recognized: Dactylomyinae (3 
    genera and
    6 species, northern Colombia and Venezuela southward to northeastern Argentina 
    and
    southernmost Brazil), Echimyinae (6 genera and 29 species, Honduras southward 
    to
    southernmost Brazil), and Eumysopinae (9 genera and 49 species, Honduras
    southward
    to
    southernmost Brazil). Members of the family are present on many nearshore
    islands,
    including San Miguel, San José and Bastimentos (all off Panama), Margarita,
    Trinidad
    and 
    Tobago, Gorgona (Colombia), and Grande, São Sebastiao and Santa Catarina
    (all off southern 
    Brazil).
