Chrono-Biographical Sketches

Miller, Robert Rush (United States 1916-2003)
ichthyology, evolutionary biology

R. R. Miller was a leading ichthyologist of his time. A protegé of and frequent collaborator with Carl Hubbs (and his son in law), Miller's early field experiences in California led him to an interest in the desert pupfish, the systematics, distribution, and conservation of the species of which became a lifelong theme in his research. Miller's more than 250 publications treated a wide range of subjects within ichthyological natural history, including studies on zoogeography, life histories, paleogeography and paleoclimatology, variation, hybrid forms, etc., with a geographical emphasis on Mexican and Great Basin forms. Miller did a lot of consulting work, and became an especially well-known voice in the area of ichthyological conservation.
