Kuchler, A(ugust) William [Wilhelm] (Germany-United States 1907-1999)
phytogeography

Kuchler was a specialist in vegetation structure and mapping whose expertise led to extensive consulting work, grant-based projects, and associations with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Kuchler's most influential publications were his two editions (1964 and 1975) of his Potential Natural Vegetation of the Conterminous United States. He also published the successful book Vegetation Mapping in 1967 (second edition, 1988).

--1941-1942: lecturer in geography, Claremont College
--1942-1944: instructor, University of Denver
--1944-1945: instructor, University of Wisconsin
--1945-1950: assistant professor, University of Rochester
--1950-1953: associate professor of geography, University of Kansas
--1953-1977: professor of geography, University of Kansas
--1959: president, Annual Symposium, Internationale Vereinigung für Vegetationskunde
--1964: publishes first edition of his Potential Natural Vegetation of the Conterminous United States
--1967: publishes his Vegetation Mapping
--1969: president, Annual Symposium, Internationale Vereinigung für Vegetationskunde
--1975: publishes second edition of his Potential Natural Vegetation of the Conterminous United States; president, Symposium on Vegetation Mapping, International Botanical Congress, Leningrad
--dies at Lawrence, Kansas, on 17 June 1999.
