Dr. Shoenfelt works with teams and individually with coaches and athletes to improve performance in competitive situations through training mental skills and team building. She publishes research and works in applied settings to enhance athletic performance. Dr. Shoenfelt is an AAASP Certified Sport Psychology Consultant and a Member of the United States Olympic Committee Registry of Sport Psychologists.

Specific applications include:

  • Developing and implementing a structured communication process for role clarification for women's basketball teams at the University of Nebraska, Western Kentucky University, and East Carolina University.
  • Conducting team building and leader development sessions for the Nebraska Women's Basketball players and coaches.
  • Developing a performance management system for the Nebraska Women's Basketball coaching and administrative staff.
  • Developing a mental skills training program for free-throw shooting for Western Kentucky University Women's Basketball Program.
  • Conducting team building and psychological skills training for the Western Kentucky University Women's Basketball Team, which made 3 NCAA Final Four appearances between 1984 and 1992.
  • Developing and implementing a structured communication process for role clarification for the Western Kentucky Lady Topper Volleyball Team, which went undefeated in the Sun Belt Conference and won a nation-leading 33 matches in 2002.
  • Developed Mental Skills for Serving Program for the Western Kentucky Lady Topper Volleyball Team.
  • Working individually with coaches and  players to develop mental skills to enhance performance in competion.

Mental Skills for Golf

Dr. Shoenfelt has worked individually with professional, intercollegiate, and junior golfers to enhance performance in competitive situations by building mental skills and problem solving skills. She has developed and delivered "Mental Skills in Golf" workshops for intercollegiate and high school golfers as well as for the Executive Women's Golf Association of Middle Tennessee. Dr. Shoenfelt authors a Mental Skills for Golf column for the Nashville, TN publication, Golfer's Tee Times. Recent articles addressed Focus, Self-Talk, Arousal (Anxiety), Imagery, Goal Setting, Practice, the Pre-Shot Routine,the Post-Shot Routine, ConfidencePrecise Targets, Putting Part I, and Putting Part II.  Individuals interested in learning progressive relaxation techniques can follow the directions in this link:  Relaxation.
