Rhinos Game Summaries

Game Number Record
Summary
1
1-0
Against the Corvette plant. The Rhinos win the coin toss and are home team, but go down 2-love after the top of the inning. Some key hitting by Sean Rubino and Marty Bink puts them up 3-2 after the first, and they never looked back. The final score was 11-10.
2
1-1
In the second game of the double-header, Rick Grieve just could not find the plate, and the home team (once again) Rhinos were drubbed 24-4. Run ruled in the 3rd inning. Nothing really good to say about this game except that it is over.
3
1-2
In the first game in which the Rhinos were the visiting team, they got off to a quick 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, they ended up being outscored 20-12 the rest of the game and lost in 5 inninngs. Rick Grieve takes the loss after relieving Alan Cowles in the 2nd inning.
4
2-2
Once again, the Rhinos are the home team as their opponents can only field 9 players. But, the early outlook is dim as the visitors put go up 5-1 after three innings. However, a 2-out rally in the bottom of the fourth pulls the Rhinos to within one run, and Casey Dawson's inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the fifth puts the game away. The home team ends up winning 13-8.

3-2
It did not look good for the home team (again!) warming up. The other team (Tidball's) was younger, in better shape, and had a couple players smacking them out in warmups. Then, we counted and came up with eight players. They got one more so they could play, but it was touch and go there for a while. Plus, we had the out at the 10-spot. However, the Rhinos' first inning in the field was horrendous and they were lucky to only give up 4 runs. A hit here, a run there, Marty Bink cleaning up the bases, Marty Arnold making three great plays in left field (not to mention Sean Rubino being picked off the bases twice) and the Rhinos were ahead 10-7 going into the top of the 7th. It wasn't a 1-2-3 inning, but any time you can come away with a 10-8 victory, you take it.
6
3-3
The visiting Rhinos jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but pitching and fielding difficulties put them behind 4-6 after one inning, and things only got worse from there. A couple of bright points emerged: Rick Grieve had 2 RBI and scored 2 runs, accounting for 80% of the scoring by himself, and Michael Cowles got on the hitting track , going 2-2. But, the final score says it all: Rhinos 5, Quebecorp 15.
7
4-3
The home team Rhinos jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back, run ruling the team 14-2 in the 5th inning.
8
4-4
The same team that whalloped the Rhinos 24-4 was back. This time, while the score was more palatable, the outcome was the same: Rhinos 17, Whallopers 29.
9
5-4
Playing in the rain, the home team Rhinos started a little slowly. Rick Grieve was a bit rusty at pitcher and allowed 5 first-inning runs. The rain did not help the fielding at all, as the ball jumped in and out of gloves all night long. But, then, we got to bat. Casey Dawson, Pitt Derryberry, and Marty Bink all got hits and scored. And it was off to the races. The Rhinos batted around the first inning, taking a 6-5 lead. The opponents tied the score, but then the Rhinos just kept hitting. Led by Nick Butler, they put up their largest run total of the season, winning the game going away, 21-7.
10
5-5
The home team Rhinos got off to a quick 6-3 start, but fizzled in the heat, losing a game they could have won 10-6. This, despite turning 3 double plays in 7 innings.
11
5-6
Starting pitcher Pitt Derryberry did not get any help as the visiting Rhinos lose in 6, 20-8.
12
6-6
The visiting Rhinos (though they really screwed up and should have been the home Rhinos) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first inning. Then, they put it on cruise control and dropped behind 8-16. A little hitting in the 5th and 6th inning made the score 15-16. A missed interference call by the umpire when Marty Bink tried to score from second did not help the cause. A quick 1-2-3 6th inning for Quebecorp gave the Rhinos the opportunity to score 5 runs and put the game away 20-15. A quick note: Nick Butler hit the team's first out-of-the-park home run in this game.
13
6-7
The Rhinos must have used up all their karma for the day in game 1 of the double-header. Against Logan Aluminum this time, they could only muster 6 runs, 4 of them in the 5th inning, but could not overcome the 18 runs scored by LA. Of course, this game would have been closer (by about 3 runs) had the umpire made the correct call at first base in the second inning. Could the Rhinos have hit more with the call? Doubtful, but they could have at least played one more inning.
14
6-8
The depleated Rhinos (minus Sean Rubino and Casey Dawson) put a a valiant effort against Tidballs, but come up on the short end of an 8 to 10 score. They head into the year end tournament as the #5 seed.
15
7-8
In the first game of the tournament, the Rhinos jump out to a 6-2 lead and then battle through a couple of bases-loaded jams to keep the score the same. Good outfield play by Chris Siegert, Nick Butler, and Casey Dawson keep the Rhinos in the game until their bats can come to life and they go home with an 11-3 victory and a date with Logan Aluminum in Round 2 of the Tourney. Props to Ken Brasel who goes 2-5, and got on base 2 other times via errors, as a last-minute sub for Marty Bink.
16
7-9
The visiting Rhinos led off the game with a 3-run spurt, and things looked good. Then, in the second inning, they gave up 11 runs to the first seeded Logan Aluminum and never really recovered. Final Score: 17-10, and a date in the Loser's Bracket.
17
8-9
The home team Rhinos spot the visitors a 1-0 lead, and then beat 'em 10-8. The Rhinos get run support all through the lineuup. Chris Seigert and Pitt Derryberry go 3-for-4, Chris George is 2-2 with a walk, and Michael Cowles is 2-3. Rick Grieve even hits an inside-the-park home run in his last game before surgery.

8-10
After the emotional victory over Quebecorp, the Rhinos went on vacation. At least we did not forfeit (though it was close; Ken Brasel for MVP for letting us play). Final 1-14.
