D. Essai en français.  This is a take-home essay due by 4 :20 p.m. of the exam day.  Choose only one of the two topics below:

1.
      Essai: Discuter la lettre écrite par Gargantua à son fils Pantagruel, d’une part et l’éducation qui a formé Montaigne, d’autre part.
     
2.
      Essai: D'après vos lectures de Montaigne, qu'est-ce qui montre que Montaigne est, pour son époque, plus tolérant en matière de religion que grand nombre de ses contemporains.

              For the essay, please bear in mind the following points: Avoid at all costs merely rehashing plots. Strive to write a well thought out, carefully organized essay, insightful and original, yet bearing at all times on the texts themselves, expressed clearly in correct English or comprehensible French. The essay should convey a sense of progression or movement, as well as familiarity with the works under discussion. Each should likewise manifest discerning critical judgment and a growing sensitivity to artistic achievement in literature. State clearly what the essay is meant to show right from the start. Take nothing for granted; assume that nothing is obvious. See to it that the essay does indeed achieve its stated purpose. Keep the essay focused on the topic; all statements should contribute to the development or elaboration of the essay topic. Bring into dicussion all the authors and works read in the course which fall within the purview of the topic; show that you are familiar with the author or work. You may write in English or in French, but not a mixture of both.
