The Anthropology Program at Western Kentucky University provides opportunities
for students to major or minor in anthropology. The major and minor in
anthropology stress the study of human culture in modern contemporary societies,
both western and non-western, as well as in the archaeological and evolutionary
past. The major and minor in anthropology complement nicely studies in
other disciplines, including history, sociology, criminology, psychology,
geology, geography, biology, chemistry, folk studies, languages, music,
art, English, religion, and philosophy. We've even had students combine
degrees in anthropology and physics or anthropology and agriculture.
Anthropology at WKU allows students to learn about the many cultures
of the world and their particular ecological, economic, political, and
religious adaptations. Students have the opportunity to study in detail
a number of areas of faculty expertise: Latin American cultures,
African cultures, women's studies, ethnography, belief systems, Kentucky
archaeology, lithic (stone artifact) analysis, and physical anthropology.
Many courses include hands-on experiences digging in the field, analyzing
artifacts in the lab, and documenting cultural lifeways. Studies overseas
is possible through WKU's International Programs.
