Emeline Davis

Born: about 15 June 1823/1824.

Parents: Can you help me uncover who her parents were?

Married: Nicholas Carney about 1838/1840/1841 in Roanoke County, VA, on the farm of Thomas and Nancy Garrett, by preacher Aaron Newman.

Children: Patrick Lee Carney, William J. Isam Carney, Mathew Carney, Margaret Carney, John Carney, Ann Elizabeth Carney, Martin Henry Carney, Summers Van Buren Carney

Died: 05 Feb 1898

Burial: Barger Cemetery, Jamestown, Fentress County, TN

Notes:

Footprints said she was a daughter of Matthew W. Wright and Margaret Ritchie. This is proven incorrect by her pension testimony.

Her mother died before Emeline was 13. Her siblings, Eliza, Louise, and Henry, were scattered about after the death of her mother. (This must mean her father was dead too.) She was taking care of Nancy Garrett when she married Nicholas Carney.

Emeline says she was 13 when she married Nicholas. She couldn't remember the year, but she says the day was Thursday. The marriage was verified by Thomas and Nancy Garrett, and took place 15 miles south of Salem, VA. She also states that Nicholas had a brother-in-law named Sam Harshbarger, who later moved to Indiana [I had originally transcribed that as MD, but on closer inspection, it looks like Ind.]. She had an uncle in Salem, VA named Carter Williams who was a shoemaker, his children were George Washington Williams and Mary Elizabeth Williams.

Nicholas was living in Botetourt County, VA and lived near Fincastle when they were married. After their marriage, they lived about a mile from Salem for two years, then moved to Fentress County, Tennessee.

Does anyone know what happened to Patrick Lee Carney? In Summers Van Buren Carney's testimony on 02 June 1897, he states that Patrick was in Desoto, Missouri.
