Rhinos Game Summaries, Summer 2012

Game Number Record
Summary
1
1-0

The new season begins. The smell of softball is in the air. Oh wait; that's Hobson Grove. Nevermind.

The Rhinos lose the coin toss but get to be home team anyway because the opposition, Anonymous, only has nine players to start. They pound out two runs, but the Rhinos counter with three, leading 3-2 after one. The Rhinos get Anonymous out in the top of the second and then explode, sending 19 batters to the plate, 17 of them with two outs. They also bat around in the third and put this one to bed early.

Final Score: Rhinos: 24, Anonymous: 4

2-0

The Rhinos win the coin toss this time. Well, rather, the BG Coyotes lose it, but the result is the same: home team.

The game is close throughout. The Rhinos take a 3-2 lead early and then fall behind 6-3. They rally to 6-5, only to fall behind again. In the bottom of the 6th, the Rhinos scrape together two runs, highlighted by Michael Henley's triple, and then put the Coyotes down in the top of the 7th to earn Jason Marshall the victory.

Final Score: Rhinos: 10; BG Coyotes: 9

3
2-1

The Rhinos take a 4-1 lead over Pro Security and Fire (formerly Booth Fire) after one and stretch out their lead to 9-3, but cannot hit in the third and fifth innings. Their late rally is not enough to overcome the Fire hitting. Newcomers TJ Massey, Rob Dye, and Andrew Keltner all get at least three hits in the loss.

Final Score: Rhinos: 11; Pro Security and Fire: 15

4
2-2

It is the same story in the second game of the DH. The Rhinos put up 10 runs in the first two innings, but then cannot hit in the third and fourth and come out on the losing end of the measure. TJ Massey, Andrew Keltner, and Jason Trombly all had three hits; TJ knocked two out of the park, one a grand slam, causing Coach Rick Grieve to mutter, "Where have you been all of my softball career?"

Final Score: Rhinos: 17; Springhill Pharmacy: 19

5
2-3

In a controversial game, the Rhinos lose their pitcher, Darryl Henley, and some lose their cool. The umpire starts the game late and ends it early, both to the detriment of the Rhinos.

Final Score: Rhinos: 11; Anonymous: 12

6
3-3

Coming off the last game's disappointing ending, the Rhinos began the game flat, trailing 0-3, and 3-6 before batting around a couple of innings. Tyler Pruden, Rob Levesque, Jason Trombly, Brandon Shoemake, and Cody Sullivan were all perfect at the plate, helping the Rhinos cruise to a run-rule victory in the 6th. Heck, even svelt Dave Carner got in the action, knocking a single through the hole that scored a run.

Final Score: Rhinos: 19; Coyotes: 8

7
4-3

The Rhinos bat around the in the first inning, and take a huge lead. Then blow it. Then take another huge lead. Then blow it. And finally hold on to win by 1. Lots of offense this game. TJ Massey had a solo HR. Rick Grieve was 3-3 with a triple and 5 RBI. Karl Case, Jason Marshall, and Andrew Keltner all had 3 hits.

Final Socre: Rhinos: 20; Pro Fire & Security: 19

8
5-3

So, it seemed as though the Rhinos used up all of their hits in the first game. This one was a defensive gem. Rob Dye was superb in LC and Rob Levesque made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch of a foul ball at third to end the game. Brandon Shoemake was perfect (2-2) at the plate. Tim Jones, Rob Dye, and Rob Levesque also had 2 hits apiece.

Final Score: Rhinos: 8; Springhill Pharmacy: 6

9
6-3

The Rhinos waited and waited and Pro Fire never showed up. Seems they got some bad info from the League, and boy were they pissed at 8:00 when they came for what they thought was an 8:25 game but was really 6:05.

Final Score: Rhinos: 1; Pro Fire & Security: 0

10
7-3

In the nightcap of the double-header, the Rhinos got down 1-10 before finally waking up the bats and going home on Karl Case's walk-off single. Jason Trombly had a big night, going 4-4 with 3 RBI. Tim Jones was quietly 4-4, too, all singles, while Andrew Keltner was 3-4 with 2 RBI. The Rhinos might have been able to win by a larger margin, but a couple of big baserunning errors late stopped that from happening.

Final Score: Rhinos: 15; Springhill Pharmacy: 14

11
7-4

There was no mojo in this game. The Rhinos had troubles stringing two hits together. Sure, Jason Trombly continued to be hot, going 3-4, and Jason Marshall (3-4) had another good game, and the new guy, Rod Bush was perfect (3-3) with a home run, but there was no batting around like this team has done in the past. In the end, Pro Fire was just too much for the Rhinos.

Final Score: Rhinos: 9; Pro Fire & Security: 14

12
7-5

Then the Rhinos waited over an hour and watched the storm blow in. Late game + bad weather = poor Rhinos play. The game was suspended in the 4th, but the Rhinos conceded to move to the playoffs.

Final Score: Rhinos: 2; Springhill Pharmacy: 12

13
7-6

The Rhinos jump out to an early lead over Springhill Pharmacy, but cannot hold on,as they only score two runs over the final four innings (never a good combination). Cody Sullivan, though, was 3-3.

Final Score: Rhinos: 8; Springhill Pharmacy: 11

14
8-6

In the first game in the loser's bracket, the Rhinos come out swinging. They get up 14-3 and hold on for a 14-8 victory. Quentin Hollis is the batting star, with an inside-the-park home run and a long single to the fence in right center.

Final Score: Rhinos: 14; BG Coyotes: 8

15 8-7

In the final game of the season, the Rhinos run into the buzz saw that is the Anonymous team. This is the second time in three seasons that this team has sent the Rhinos packing. This time, it is behind a 27-run outburst that leaves the tired Rhinos team stunned. The Rhinos put up a decent number of runs; they just could not contain the Anonymous hitters. And this was the team that the Rhinos began the season by defeating 24-4...rrrriiiiiggggghhhhhtttttt.

Final Score: Rhinos: 11; Anonymous: 27

Thank-you to all the Rhinos for a great season! Looking forward to playing ball with you all in 2014!
