Practicums and Internships

This website is designed to assist you with learning about your practicum and internship programs without having to attend any special meetings or sessions. If you have any questions, please check the course syllabus and video tutorial first before you email the instructor.

First, read the appropriate syllabus for the course you wish to take. HMD-313 is the practicum and MUST be completed first. HMD-410 is the internship -- you cannot enroll in the internship until you successfully complete the practicum. Note: All minors take HMD-313 (the practicum) not HMD-410. Whichever course you wish to enroll in, you should read and understand the syllabus for that course.

I would strongly recommend that you listen to the video tutorial -- it has an explanation for many of the requirements for the practicum/internship. It is a PowerPoint presentation with an audio track that lasts about eighteen minutes (use Internet Explorer if you have trouble viewing the tutorial with FireFox or another browser). A link for the PowerPoint presentation only (without audio) is also included so you can scroll through the slides to find information quickly.

You are required to take the test for either the practicum or the internship -- depending on which course you plan to enroll. You must achieve a score of 100% in order to receive clearance to register for the course. You may use the course syllabus or any other materials when taking the test -- it is "open book, open note". When you attain a score of 100%, you are indicating that you know and understand the contents of the syllabus. Understanding and following the procedures outlined in the syllabus will constitute a major part of your "attention to detail" grade during your internship or practicum.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Read the appropriate course syllabus
  2. Listen to the Video Tutorial
  3. Take the test -- refer to the syllabus as you take the test
  4. Record your answers on a scantron
  5. Check your answers -- you must receive 100%
  6. Deliver the scantron to Dr. Patterson for grading (Academic Complex, Room 209C)
  7. If you get all the answers correct, you will be able to register for the course
  8. If you make any errors, you will need to retake the test until you get all of the answers correct.

On the scantron, please put the following information:

  1. Your name
  2. The class you wish to enroll in -- either HMD-313 (practicum) or HMD-410 (internship)
  3. Your Student ID number (800 number)

If you get confused on what to do, feel free to ask questions.
