Introduction to Management in the Hospitality Industry
Spring 2012
General Information for All Exams
The exams in this course are typically multiple-choice
exams but two exams will have short answer and/or
calculation questions. You may use a calculator on the calculation questions but you may not use a cell phone as a calculator.
No books, papers, aids or electronic devices may be used during the exam, except calculators as indicated above. International students may use a paper dictionary or electronic "translator" to assist with translating the words on the exam. Please notify the instructor if you plan to use a dictionary/translator.
When taking the exam, only one browser window or tab may be open -- the exam. If the proctor finds a second window/tab open, you will receive a zero for the exam regardless of what is currently in the second window/tab. When finished with the exam, notify the proctor that you have completed and submitted the exam.
Any exceptions to the above will be announced by the instructor.
When studying for the exam:
Exam questions will come mostly from the book and class notes.
Questions will also come from "Industry News" and "Supplemental Readings" (to keep you honest!).

Testing Procedures
You must make an appointment to take exams at the online testing center which is located in Garrett Conference Center, Room 108 (DELO), if you live on or near Western's campus. To make an appointment do the following:
1. Log in to TopNet as you normally do
2. Click on "Student Services"
3. Click on "Registration"
4. Click on the "Online Exam Reservation" link at the bottom of the Registration page.
The system will lead you through the process of making the reservation. Only the dates established by your instructor for the exam should be shown. The system will confirm your date and time immediately and you will be able to print the confirmation page as a reminder. Go to the testing center website for more details (http://www.wku.edu/testing/). The testing center hours are typically 8:30 to 4:30 with the first testing appointment at 8:30 and the last appointment at 3:30 p.m.
Be very careful when you select an exam date and time -- dates may be provided for other courses utilizing the testing center -- not just this one -- and some of the dates may not apply to this course. Note: Just because a date appears on the list, it does not mean it is an appropriate selection for this course -- exams are given on the above dates only. You must make your appointment well in advance since other online classes on campus are competing for a limited number of time slots. Off-campus students, please refer to items 4 and 5 below.
You must make an appointment at least 24-hours in advance of the time you want to take the exam. You will not be permitted to make an appointment less than 24-hours before you take the exam -- the bottom line is that you need to make your appointment early. Once you make your reservation and receive the confirmation, you will not be able to change the reservation. Call 745-5122 to have the system reset if you make a mistake. You must then follow the instructions as before in TopNet to schedule your exam again (note: all of this must be accomplished at least 24 hours before the exam).
Students may also take exams at the Glasgow campus if that is more convenient. Their hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. -- again, these times are subject to change so check with the Glasgow campus to be sure. If you plan on taking the exam in Glasgow, you will register for the exam on TopNet. Also, you must let the instructor know that you are taking the exam in Glasgow so a password can be sent to them. In the event you need to contact them for some reason, the phone number to use when calling from Glasgow is: 659-6900. If you are calling from Bowling Green, the number is: 745-5096. The point of contact is Thomas Gaffin (thomas.gaffin@wku.edu).
Students who do not attend classes on Western's campus will take
exams at a test site in the vicinity of their residence. Those students
should contact the instructor at least three weeks before the first
exam to coordinate an appropriate test site. Proctored test sites
could be a public library, any school (elementary, middle, high, community college, etc.),
businesses, military facilities, WKU satellite campuses in E'town, Owensboro, etc. as long as they have access to the internet and an individual who is willing to be responsible for proctoring the exam. If you plan to take your exam off-campus, DO NOT register for the exam on TopNet -- you will register only with the exam site you have chosen. You must provide the instructor with the name, phone number and email address of the person who will proctor your exam at least a week prior to the exam. You will not be permitted to take the exam unless the instructor has been able to contact the proctor.
For a listing of sites that have agreed to proctor exams for Western
students, go to the following web
address: http://www.wku.edu/testing/ and click on "Find Other Test Sites". Some of the sites listed have a fee involved with proctoring the exam. You are welcome to pay the fee but there are abundant "free" options available to you.
Please keep in mind that you are not limited to the test centers listed
on this web site but, if you want a site other than what is on this list, it is incumbent
on the student to find it. You are responsible for determining the hours of operation of your testing center and scheduling an appointment. All sites must be approved in advance by the instructor.
Don't wait until the last minute to make an appointment since students from several other classes will be "competing" for the same time slots and the testing center can only test a limited number of students at the same time [limited by the number of computers they have]. You will need to be flexible because when they reach their limit in a certain time slot, you will need to choose another.
Go to the appropriate testing center at your scheduled time -- please be prompt. They will check your ID and have you sign in and out of the testing center. Be sure to have a picture ID with you -- you will not be allowed to take the exam without a picture ID.
When you are ready to take the exam, you will log
on to the CourseInfo website like you normally do each
week. There will be a link on the site for the exam
[usually under the "Exams" button]. When you click
on the link, a dialog box will come up asking you for
a password. This will be a special password needed to
access the exam that only the people at the testing
center will have -- students do not have access to the password. A proctor at the testing center will enter the password
and the exam will come up. Note: When taking the exam, only
use the mouse for moving around the exam -- do not
use any of the keys on the keyboard such as the backspace key, enter key, etc. for multiple-choice questions. Also, do not use the "back" button or "refresh/reload" button on your browser. If you hit any of these keys, you may lose your entire exam and you will need to start over again. Basically you should only use the mouse to click on your answer to the questions and the submit button when you are finished -- nothing else unless you are required to type in your answer.
You may see a message that says you can take the exam multiple times -- this is NOT correct. You may only take the exam once -- there are no second chances. Once your exam is submitted, you will not be permitted to take the exam again. If your proctor lets you take the exam twice by mistake, the first attempt will be used to determine the exam grade.
Be sure to answer all questions before you click on the "submit" button. Once you have clicked on the "submit" button, there is no going back to make changes. The exam must be completed in one sitting -- you will not be permitted to leave and come back to take the exam.
Exam grades will be posted on the course website after everyone in the class has taken the exam. You will be the only person who will see your grades. Sometimes this can take an extra week or so depending on how far away students live. If I see that it will take a long time, I will send each individual his/her grade via email. Once posted, this grade will then be available on the web at all times except during exam weeks. Note: During exam weeks, the software we use requires that I temporarily take all grades off the web and I can't put them back until all exams are completed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.
