Grading:

20% = Quizzes
20% = In-Class Assignments
20% = Homework
20% = Presentations (includes oral/in-class presentations and/or PowerPoint presentations)
20% = Professionalism**, Preparation, & Participation***

**All individuals are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Unprofessional behavior such as, but not limited to, repeated disruption of class (including habitually walking in after class has started and/or leaving the room during class), disruption of class by personal cell phone, sleeping in class, “temper tantrums,” or rudeness toward ANY person will be considered serious violations of this standard and will lower your grade accordingly! PLEASE NOTE: A more detailed discussion of this topic will take place during our first class meeting -- students will be responsible for all info provided/discussed during that time!!
***Class participation grade starts at 70% and will be raised or lowered from there! Be aware that "just showing up” will not earn a grade higher than the 70%.

Additional notes on grading policy:

  1. Makeup quizzes will be given only by arrangement with the instructor prior to the scheduled test date. In documented cases of emergency, please notify the instructor as soon as possible to arrange a makeup test. To avoid unfair advantage to any student, makeup tests will not be the same as the scheduled tests.
  2. There will be ABSOLUTELY NO makeups of in-class assignments!
  3. Homework assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class. Any assignments turned in after the start of class will be graded as late.
  4. Penalty for late assignments: Reduction of grade by 25 percentage points for each 24-hour period that the assignment is late. This includes weekend days! No late assignments will be accepted after 4 days, at which time grade will be reduced to 0 (i.e. 4 days x -25 pts. per day = -100 = 0%).
  5. Please be aware of the fact that absence from class and/or late arrival for class does NOT relieve the student of the responsibility of turning in assignments on time.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance in this course is strongly encouraged. The effect of absences FOR ANY REASON on a student’s FINAL grade will be reflected by class participation and in-class assignment grades. Additional notes on attendance policy:
  1. Material discussed in class will often include topics not covered in the text. It is to the student's advantage to attend all classes in order to be exposed to all material.
  2. If students are absent or late to class, it shall be their responsibility to make themselves aware of any and all class announcements, assignment instructions, date and/or classroom changes, course material covered in class, etc.
  3. Exceptions for DOCUMENTED SCHOOL ACTIVITIES or DOCUMENTED MEDICAL OR FAMILY EMERGENCIES will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

“Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty may receive from the instructor a failing grade in that portion of the course work in which the act is detected or a failing grade in a course without possibility of withdrawal. The faculty member may also present the case to the Office of Student Life for disciplinary sanctions.” -- WKU Catalog, 2008-10.

In addition, in any case where a previous incident has been reported involving the student, penalty will be a grade of 'F' for the course AND a written report of the incident to the CFS Department; to the Dean of the College of Health & Human Services, and to the Office of the Dean of Student Life (along with a written request for disciplinary sanctions at the University level).
