CLASS PRESENTATIONS 

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

     (1)  6-7 pp. paper on a topic from the first part of the course (choice of topics provided) [25 pts] 
** (2)  paired class presentation on one of the final three topics in class (weeks 12-14) [20 pts.] 
     (3)  10-15 pp. research paper [35 pts.] on a student-selected topic (this may coincide with the presentation theme) 
     (4)  preparation / participation [10/10 pts] based on weekly meetings

KO, ch.22:  Waldron: Security and Liberty: The Image of Balance (363-378) 

KO, ch.23:  Shue: Torture in Dreamland: Disposing of the Ticking Bomb (379-385) 

KO, ch.24:  McMahan: Torture, Morality, and Law (386-391) 

PROCEDURE:  Students should work together and prepare (1) a summary of the main points and arguments in the readings, (2) a critical reaction to some of the positions encountered, and (3) a set of further questions for class discussion about the topic.  These items should be summarized in schematic form (including page references to the text, and short quotations where appropriate), and they should be available to the class as a 2-3 pp. handout.
