The Student Affiliates chapter at Western Kentucky University has placed an emphasis this year on serving the community (broadly defined). We have thus attempted to find creative ways of combining chemistry demonstrations and other activities with opportunities to serve society. As one example, we gave away over 1000 cups of liquid nitrogen ice cream and solicited donations that were given in their entirety to a fund for Hurricane Katrina. We have also utilized chemistry “magic shows”, shrinking polystyrene toys, and other demonstrations to reach out to various regional schools and a local children’s home. Details of these and other service activities will be provided. Such service activities are particularly valuable since they promote a positive image of chemistry, provide needed service to the community, and engage Student Affiliate members in their society.
