The Student Affiliate chapter of Western Kentucky University regularly participates in a variety of successful outreach programs. Recent activities include making and giving away samples of liquid nitrogen ice cream to approximately 600 members of the campus community as part of National Chemistry Week. Members of the SA chapter also routinely assist departmental faculty and staff during activities such as chemistry “magic shows” at local elementary schools and a summer chemistry camp that was held during the summer on the Western Kentucky campus. The chapter has presented at both regional and national ACS meetings a demonstration of an activity involving the shrinking of polystyrene. Finally, the chapter has a very high percentage of members who participate in undergraduate research and present their results at the local, regional, and national levels.
