Attendance Policy in Dr. Garrett's Courses

At WKU individual instructors set attendance policy.

Although part of the class participation grade in this course will be determined by attendance, for students with less than 75 percent attendance (as recorded in my attendance/grade book), an additional threshold rule will be invoked. This rule is:

Students with less than 75 percent attendance will receive no higher than a C; students with less than 60% attendance will receive no higher than a D.
Excused absences (See Note below) will not count as absences but will also not count as class attendance. You will be expected to read and sign a statement that you are aware of and accept the threshold rule.

It may help you to think of what the threshold rule amounts to in terms of class sessions. For a 41 session MWF class, 75 percent is 31 sessions and 60 percent is 25 sessions. For a 28 session Tuesday-Thursday class, 75 percent is 21 sessions and 60 percent is 17 sessions.

No student who comes into class after the instructor has taken roll can be guaranteed having his or her attendance recorded. Those who have entered the classroom shortly after roll has been taken or a quiz given must speak to the instructor immediately after class is dismissed if they wish their attendance to be recorded. Those who over-use this option may not have their late attendance recorded at all. Those who enter class after a major part of it is over may not have their late attendance recorded or may have it recorded in a fractional manner.

Note: Normally, an absence counts as excused only if you present official documentation, such as a court summons or doctor's note. If you are absent because of attendance at a funeral, the order of service from the funeral may be used if the date of the funeral is that of the class missed.
