TAYASSUIDAE (Peccaries, or Javelinas)

The Tayassuidae is a family of New World pigs of the Order Artiodactyla. There are four
living species in three genera: Catagonus wagneri (northern Argentina and the Chaco of
Bolivia and Paraguay), Tayassu pecari (northernmost Argentina and southernmost Brazil
northward to southern Mexico; introduced to Cuba), and Pecari (two species, northern
Argentina and southernmost Brazil northward to Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas;
introduced to Cuba). Present on the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, and Cozumel (perhaps
introduced).
