CAPROMYIDAE (Hutias)

The Capromyidae are a family of hystricomorph rodents restricted to the West
Indies. There are three subfamilies with extant forms currently recognized: Capromyinae
(twelve species; Cuba and nearby islands, the Bahamas, and Jamaica), Isolobodontinae (one
species; Hispaniola and nearby islands), and Plagiodontinae (one species; Hispaniola).
Additional species from all three subfamilies have only recently gone extinct, and almost
all of the persisting forms are considered vulnerable.
