Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

Spooky World

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1975 Schroder Music Company, renewed 2003.

I don't need horror pictures
To refrigerate my spine,
What happens in the real life daytime
Is enough to jell my mind.
I don't need pills and powders
To disarrange my dream,
Just to read the morning paper
Is enough to make you scream.

Chorus:
It's a spooky world,
It's a kooky world,
So much is all gone wrong.
It's eerie, dear,
And very queer,
And I don't think I belong here.

I don't need science fiction
To penetrate my soul,
What goes on in the city
Can make the blood turn cold.
This homey world I live in
Has become a scary place,
I can be happy sometimes
If I turn away my face.

(Chorus)

I'd like to find some quiet,
Hear the gentle music play,
Then maybe I'd be ready
For another spooky day.
They tell me to forget the grieving
And the rip-offs that I see,
But how can I forget them
When they're all a part of me.

(Chorus)
