Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

My Little Guitar

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1977 Schroder Music Company, renewed 2005. One day Malvina accidentally left her guitar in the dressing room at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. She had to wait till the next morning to find that it was safe, and in the meantime wrote this song.

My little guitar, you're a part of me,
I tune you right and I touch you light
And you answer sweetly.
You ride by my side in the bumpy car,
And I'm never alone wherever I'm going
With my little guitar.

Mister Baggage Man, use a civil hand
When you put her world-traveled case down the chute,
If you give her a chance
She could make you dance
In your working boots.

My little guitar, you're a pretty thing.
And I have to sing along
When I hear you sing.
Some loving hands made you what you are,
And the passing time made you sweet as wine,
My little guitar.
