Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

Lake of the Isles

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1969 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1997. A rewrite of Malvina's song “Seabeck” created for a campaign to get motor boats off the lake.

The water was so still in the evening, so still,
That all the trees were upside down,
And all you could hear was the little birds singing
And the stars sneaking out one by one,
And the sky turning slowly around.

Chorus:
At Lake of the Isles in Minnesota
Up near the northern line,
And it's all so clean and cooly green,
That's where I mean to be, oh yes,
That's where you'll find me.

I pray the motor boats vanish, I pray,
And the automobiles run down, run down,
And the little kids dance in the middle of the rain,
And the fishes swim to the sound,
And the sky turning slowly around.

(Chorus)
