Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

This Dream I Have

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1966 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1994.

I try to run but my feet stick to the ground,
I try to climb but my legs are iron bound,
I fall in the river and it seems to flow,
But it's something thick and my arms won't go,
I open my mouth and scream but there is no sound.

Chorus:
And it's this dream I have all day and all the time,
And it's this dream I have all day and all the time,
And it's this dream I have all day and all the time,
And it's this dream I have while I stand with this pencil
Writing down this rhyme.

I'm standing in this light in my naked skin,
And a hundred thousand eyes are boring in,
And every cruel thing I've done
That I thought was hid from everyone,
It's written on my hide with a golden pen.

(Chorus)
