Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

Put On Your Hat

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1958 by the author, 1963 by Schroder Music Company. In the Table of Contents to her songbook Song in My Pocket (1954) Malvina writes of this song: "...and let's go out and see some of the finer things of life, such as the world's children playing all together, as they surely would if we'd only leave them alone."

Put on your hat and come with me
And let's go out in the garden,
We'll see the flowers shining bright,
Yellow and red and blue and white,
And the bees buzz by and the butterflies fly,
Where the pretty flowers grow.

Put on your hat and come with me
And let's go down to the playground,
We'll see the children shining bright,
Yellow and tan and brown and white,
All in a ring or flying on the swing,
Where the pretty children grow.
