Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

I'm Too Dumb

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1954 and 1958 by the author, 1963 by Schroder Music Company. In the Table of Contents to her songbook Song in My Pocket Malvina writes of this song: "Not at all stupid--just modest, as are so many of our good citizens who leave the nation's business to shrewder and meaner heads."

I'm too dumb. Elect some other guy.
Send someone else to Washington that knows much more than I.
I know he won't look out for me, he's all for number one,
But he's so educated and I'm too dumb.

I'm too dumb. I never studied law.
And all those complicated bills just paralyze my jaw.
Wall Street agents fram'd them to put me on the bum.
They pass the bill and I keep still 'cause I'm too dumb.

I'm too dumb. I'll tell you how I know,
Some big time operator has so often told me so.
Sometimes I get to thinking and wondering how come.
Next time they pull a fast one I think I'll holler some,

And say, "Hey Jack, get off of my back, I'm NOT THAT DUMB."
