Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

I Lived Through This Day

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1965 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1993. In the Notes and Comments to her songbook The Muse of Parker Street Malvina writes: "This song is dedicated to the mothers who somehow make it to live through wars, poverty, and other disasters, and take care of their families one way and another. When my husband's mother, who raised ten in spite of hardships, was asked how she managed, she said, 'A day at a time.'"

Well I lived thro this day,
How I lived thro this day
I don't know, but I lived thro this day.
What I did, I did do,
And what came, I lived thro,
And it's gone like the sun on its way.

Just a day at a time,
That's the way I live mine,
And the days come and go,
Where they go, I don't know.
But I lived thro this day,
How I lived thro this day
I don't know, but I lived thro this day.

So the days slip away,
And the fine, and the gray,
As they come, so they come, anyway, anyway.
And I drop into bed,
I don't think what's ahead,
Cause I'll just live it thro,
One more day.
