Monster - Space Clown - Pathfinder RPG

Colorful garish clothing and enormous shoes would look comical if the wear didn't have pale white skin, a large red nose, painted face, and a maw of wicked snaggled fangs extending down over its teeth.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Compression (Ex) Can move through an area as small as one-quarter your space without squeezing or one-eighth its space when squeezing.

Death Throes (Su) When killed, a space clown explodes in a flash of electricity that deals 5d6 points of damage to anything within 10 feet (Reflex DC 17 halves). The save DC is Constitution-based.

Mobility Gain +4 dodge bonus to AC against attacks of opportunity caused when you move out of or within a threatened area. A condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

Phantasmal Form (Su) 3/day—As standard action, use illusion to change your appearance to anything you wish of roughly the same size. You look, feel, and smell just like the object or creature. Must succeed in a Disguise check (with +10 bonus) to duplicate appearance of a specific individual. The illusion lasts for as long as you concentration plus 5 rounds. Interacting with the illusion allows a DC 14 Will save to disbelieve. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Pie Toss (Su) As standard action, materialize and throw banana cream pie as ranged touch with 45 ft. range and no increments. Successful hit deals 2d6 bludgeoning damage (with no Strength modifier), and if target is humanoid and has Int 3 or higher, it must make a DC 14 Will save or collapse prone with laughter. Target is not considered helpless. On the creature's next turn, as a full-round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity, it may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. The laughter lasts 5 rounds unless a successful save ends it early. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Shock (Ex) As standard action, make melee touch attack to deal 3d6 electricity damage. On a successful critical hit, target must make DC 17 Fortitude save or be stunned for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Sound Imitation (Ex) Mimic any voice or sound you have heard by making a successful Bluff check against listener's Sense Motive check.

Squeakers (Ex) Unless veiled in phantasmal form, clown shoes squeak and can be heard out to a range of 30 ft. which negates all attempts to move silently.

SOURCE

Converted by Charles W. Plemons III from Spelljammer, Adventures in Space.

Space clowns are the inhabitants of a Wildspace system known as Clownspace. The humans who once inhabited the system's three ring-shaped worlds placed their faith in a god of revelry. Their worship ceremonies were centered on festivals and frivolity. Over time, the people's happiness hinged on the ever-increasing consumption of an elixir called Thrill Joy. Only after they became addicted did they discover that the priests of their faith had distilled the elixir from demonic ichor and the nectar of the bozo flower. Eventually, Thrill Joy transformed the faithful into fiendish creatures and "blessed" them with clown-like appearances.

Space clowns acquired their first spelljamming helms from dohwar merchants. Subsequent visits to other Wildspace systems led to contact with a multitude of other folk. In the wake of these encounters, love and fear of clowns has spread to all corners of the multiverse, just as the space clowns have done themselves.

Marauding space clowns feed on Humanoid flesh. They travel through space in garishly decorated ships and sometimes take up residence on populated worlds, where they set up carnival tents to lure curious onlookers into their clutches.

A space clown looks like the traditionally painted humanoid clown with white skin, exaggerated features, and a bright red nose. However, the space clown is not wearing any make-up. It possesses normal human-like teeth, but it can instantly extend a row of razor-sharp fangs over these teeth which appears much like a shark's maw. They possess a twisted sense of humor and laugh and giggle at the injury and suffering of others.

Advancement

Exceptional space clowns advance with class levels. Those who take up a life of marauding frequently take rogue or swashbuckler levels with bards and skalds becoming first mates and captains. Some become landbound travelers and often learn wizardry. Legends tell of stranded space clown enclaves populated by terrifying barbarian berserker clowns.

Design Notes

This is a conversion from the space clown monster in Dungeons & Dragons 5E Spelljammer campaign. The conversion was done using The Genius Guide to the Talented Bestiary which makes some slight monster design changes based upon role (in this case "Skilled") over monster type. The goal was not a photocopy conversion, although the two creature stat blocks are very similar. I wanted to get rid of the ray guns and lean in a bit more into the slapstick (hence, the pies). However, I also see the horror value in fiendish clowns and leaned heavily into It and horror tropes. So, I gave them compression, sound imitation, and some more minor magic. A creepy clown coming in through the windows or stepping through the shadows and revealing a gaping maw of shark teeth is just what the doctor ordered.
