Age of Worms Quest
Prevent the Age of Worms

Quest Summary

After learning of the Ebon Triad's efforts to bring forth an Overgod, an amalgamation of Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul, the party found ties to a strange form of undead—the spawn of Kyuss. Further research showed that Kyuss was prophesized to return in an apocalypse known as the Age of Worms. The result would be the death and destruction of life across the face of Faerun if the Wormgod is able to manifest.

Milestones

  • Armory of Malchor Harpell — Fighting against a god requires powerful magic, and Malchor provided the party with a number of items in exchange for a fragment of the Shattered Scepter of Calim. The items included the following: belt of priestly might, Bladeguard, +6 cloak of charisma, cloak of thorns, energy bow, greater bracers of archery, Lightbringer, ring of freedom of movement, +3 ring of protection, ring of wizardry II, and Stalker. All but Bladeguard and the +6 cloak of charisma are still with the party.
  • Death of the Apostle — Although the Mercenaries fled, word arrived from Waterdeep that the Apostle of Kyuss had been slain by the city's defenders.
  • Death of the Harbinger — In Kuluth-Mar, the Mercenaries succeeded in slaying the Harbinger of Worms, a spellweaver lich who was instrumental in prodding Kyuss along into ascension of godhood. The destruction of the Harbinger destroyed the Spire of Long Shadows and eliminated a cancerous blight of Kyuss' power upon the land.
  • Trials of Tilagos — Completing these tasks revealed to the party the location of Dragotha's phylactery. Finding and destroying the phylactery would make it possible to slay Dragotha, Kyuss' general.
  • Visions of Last Resort — After completing the Trials of Tilagos, the party had a dreamscape experience where they saw the armies of Kyuss, led by Dragotha, figthing the war of the first dawning of the Age of Worms, 1,500 years ago. Although they saw Lashonna killed by Dragotha, the party was able to aid the Order of the Storm in hiding the dracolich's phylactery in Kongen-Thulnir.

Setbacks

  • Champion's Games of Waterdeep — Although this was a colossal failure on the part of the Mercenaries, it was key in showing the destructive power of Kyuss and give a foretaste of what is coming should the Age of Worms occur.
  • Loss of the Ring — A wyrm fang dragon stole Lyrin's slain body, taking with it the ancient ring of the Djen.
  • Loss of the Swords — During the battle with the Harbinger of Worms, Thoril was lost to the Plane of Negative Energy. He carried with him a pair of swords from the ancient days, the Sword of Teshyllal and its companion lightning sword.
  • Prendergast Brokengulf — The fiend responsible for the massive deaths in Waterdeep was transformed by Kyuss' power into an undead monster and escaped to parts unknown. This powerful minion of Kyuss is still out there, somewhere.
