General structure of the course.

Class begins 15 May and ends 2 June. The weekly schedule of coursework includes readings from the required text, "Pinnick's Guide" to the course content ( organized in a numbered, lecture-based format), feature films, and writing assignments (reading responses and position papers).

The details about the writing assignments will be provided during the term. In general, the reading responses are each 100< words and the position papers are each 750< words. Both kinds of writing assignments will have a specified format, must use a specialized vocabulary, organize ideas in logical order, and must incorporate all appropriate materials. Written work is graded for 1) style, 2) appropriate content, and 3) correct spelling and grammar. Late assignments will not receive full credit.

Students should understand that a well-written paper of any sort requires at least as much preparation time as the time needed to write the paper itself.

Final grades are a factor of 100 total possible points (usual scale), determined solely on the basis of the following:

10 points participation, as assessed by the Instructor, including timely submission of assignments.

60 points reading responses.

15 points position paper 1.

15 points position paper 2.

Students and the Instructor shall abide by all appropriate provisions of the WKU Student Handbook and any additional provisions in relevant university documents. This includes the Honor Code. Whereas it is acceptable always to discuss the assignments with others, all work that you submit is to be your work. Services such as the WKU Writing Center, TLC, &c., (as may be available) are always appropriate for students to use.
