FLK 379: Foodways
Extra Credit
The following options are available for extra credit.
Follow the same instructions
as for the required food sharing
assignment. Extra credit food sharings may consist of a food from any folk group. In any case,
be sure to indicate the folk group the food is from.
NOTE: Time constraints allow for
extra food sharings only on those dates for which
food sharings are already scheduled, of which there
are two. This means a limit of one extra food
sharing per student. Please schedule in
advance.
A few options here:
1. Dine at an ethnic or international restaurant, then submit a 2-page (typed, double-spaced, stapled, etc.) summary and reflection of your experience. Your report should include concepts from the class.
2. Visit an ethnic or international food store and purchase a food item or items. (It’s a good idea to ask the owner or manager for recommendations if you don’t know what to get.) Prepare and eat what you bought, then write a 2-page (typed, double-spaced, stapled, etc.) summary and reflection of your entire experience from store to meal. As with option #1, your report should incorporate concepts from the class.
3. Attend a local festival where food is served and try a dish you’ve never had before (or at least a new variation of a dish you have had). Compose a 2-page (typed, double-spaced, stapled, etc.) summary and reflection of your experience. Again, your report should include concepts from the class.
4. Have dinner at someone’s house who is of a different race, nationality, or religion. Compose a 2-page (typed, double-spaced, stapled, etc.) summary and reflection of your experience, including relevant concepts from the class.
5. Go to a Farmer’s Market and talk to the people there (vendors, buyers, etc.). Same as options 1-4: 2-page typed summary and reflection with course concepts.
Each extra credit assignment completed is worth up to five additional points. Barring the food sharing option, there is no limit as to how many extra credit assignments may be completed.
* NOTE: You are not restricted to this list of extra credit options. Students are strongly encouraged to come up
with their own ideas for experiences that will challenge them culturally and
intellectually. However, ideas not
listed here must be approved in advance.
If you’ve got a good idea, I’ll approve it and add it to the list!!
